In comparison, my wife and I had been in a luxury entry-level hotel in Ocean City back in late June. The Oakland Motel did a great job of keeping the room, including the carpet, clean. I do want to spend a moment and talk about the rug. Providing a box of tissues would have been beneficial, too. Only one chair was provided, and a second chair would have helped. While they added to the ambiance of the room, having the space on these end tables for our stuff would have been helpful. There were a few small end tables, which had little fishing ‘doo-dads’ on them. There were plenty of coffee and tea supplies, along with a roll of paper towels. The room had a small frig, along with a microwave. We had a large credenza which provided closet and dresser space, along with a 32” LCD TV. With a few exceptions, the room was furnished pretty well. Our room was a decent size, and had a king size bed, which was comfortable. The owner, Brent, stopped by several times during our stay to see how we were doing, and to ask if we needed anything. One of the other rooms even has a baby grand piano. Our room, for example, had a fishing motif. To start with, at the Oakland Motel, the rooms have been customized-no similar cookie-cutter appearance to each room. There are several advantages of staying in a family owned motel, compared to a chain like Days Inn. Traffic on the main road that runs through town was very loud all night as the motel is so close to the road. A window air conditioner and a dehumidified sitting on the floor were very loud, but we turned them off before going to bed and back on in the morning. There was no closet, only a hanging fabric thing for storing clothes. The large screen TV was set to fill only 2/3 of the screen (very odd). The only table was high and using a laptop meant sitting on a high, backless stool to use it. There was only one bedside table or nightstand and the light on it was very low wattage. The negatives: Room itself (aside from the bathroom) was very poorly lit. Internet speed was decent at 10 Mbps down and 13 Mbps up. The bathroom light was very good (the wife liked that). The new shower stall also had a good number of "shelves" for soap, shampoo, etc. Shower water pressure was better than most hotels and inns. There was a second sink outside the bathroom. Parking is right at the door to your room. In addition to a microwave and coffee pot with the usual, there was a toaster (oddly, there also was a notice stating "no cooking in rooms"). What was good about the Oakland Motel: Friendly clerk at check-in who allowed us into our rooms nearly 2 hours early. When I did a Web search on my laptop for Oakland's cell service, it was claimed they had AT&T service. In addition, at least for us, there is absolutely no cell phone service anywhere in the town. You have your choice between a Denny's, (we stopped visiting them years ago because each and every one has been absolutely terrible), or Mickey D's and other fast-food joints (and they are all crowded at breakfast time). Even in the summer, it is nearly impossible to get breakfast here except on the weekend. First some information about the town itself. So many people gave this motel such good scores, we almost reserved it a second time for our return trip a few days later.
